Fire Water Loop

Definition

A looped private fire service main encircling a building or campus so that fire flow can reach any hydrant or riser from two directions. Installed to NFPA 24, typically in large-diameter ductile iron pipe with restrained joints and thrust blocking.

Why is a fire main looped instead of run as a dead end?

A loop provides two flow paths to every hydrant and riser. If one leg is shut down for a repair or is damaged, the other still delivers fire flow. Looping also reduces friction loss and eliminates the stagnant dead-end branches that cause water quality problems.

What testing does a fire water loop require before acceptance?

Flushing at a required velocity, a hydrostatic test at 200 psi or 50 psi above static pressure held for two hours, and a signed NFPA 24 Contractor’s Material and Test Certificate for Underground Piping. On potable-fed systems, bacteriological sampling and clearance is also required. The authority having jurisdiction and often the property insurer both review the certificate.
